Notes |
- Second generation of OneWeb satellites, due to be in service in 2024-25, will include positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) facilities, designed to allow the company to compete with other satellite navigation services such as the EU’s Galileo, Russia’s Glonass and the US’s GPS.
- SpaceX launched a technology demonstration satellite for OneWeb’s second-generation broadband constellation in May 2023. One of the satellites launched for OneWeb, JoeySat, is designed to test capabilities for a second-generation constellation the company has said could start deployments as soon as 2025.
- Eutelsat has combined its geostationary satellite business with OneWeb’s low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation after shareholders voted Sept 2023 in favor of the all-share deal. OneWeb will operate as a subsidiary of the French operator called Eutelsat OneWeb and its center of operations will remain in London.
- A search for companies to build OneWeb’s second-generation constellation could kick off by summer, French satellite operator Eutelsat said Feb 2023 as it closes in on buying the British venture.
- Eutelsat and OneWeb provided a strategy update on their proposed combination on Wednesday, sharing more details about 1.5 billion euros in incremental synergies and the Gen-2 OneWeb constellation, expected to enter service by early 2028.
- Eutelsat scales back OneWeb Gen 2 upgrade plan, SpaceNews, 2024-02-16.
